If your UPS isn't listed

First, if there are other models by the same manufacturer, try their drivers. You may find that it "just works" or mostly works. In either case, send in a report so this list and the driver can be improved.

Next, if you don't find any match, there are a few drivers that have a good chance of working on random hardware. Obviously "genericups" covers a great deal of contact closure devices. If you have a contact closure UPS, it probably matches one of the existing types.

If you're dealing with a smart protocol UPS, the next thing to try are the bestups, fentonups, and sec drivers. They implement the PhoenixTec, Megatec, and SEC protocols, respectively. Many UPS units have a common heritage in China or Taiwan, and there's no surprise that many use nearly identical protocols as a result.

After doing that, if those aren't working, you might try running other ones from the set to see if anything works. Sometimes you get lucky. Finally, if absolutely nothing works and your cabling is OK, try contacting the list and we'll see what we can do for you.

Most of the drivers use standard serial ports. There are now a few exceptions.

USB UPS support exists for Linux, and experimentally for *BSD and Solaris with the newhidups, tripplite_usb and bcmxcp_usb drivers. See the FAQ for more information on building and using them.

There is also an SNMP driver called snmp-ups that support RFC 1628 (aka UPS MIB), MGE MIB, APC MIB and several other manufacturers.

In general, if a driver does not exist, that's due to the lack of overlap between the set of developers and the set of owners of that hardware. The way to fix it is to turn a developer into an owner or an owner into a developer.

There is a lot of UPS hardware for sale, and it's possible that I've missed listing some that are supported. Please report any omissions so that this list can be as accurate as possible.
